Schorr, Joshua Heshel
(1818-95)
   Galician scholar, editor and leader of the Haskalah. He was born in Brody, and worked as a merchant there. In 1852 he established the periodical He-Halutz, which he edited until 1887. In numerous articles he espoused religious and social reform. He engaged in satirical diatribes against Orthodox Judaism, and scholarly polemics against talmudic and rabbinic law. To the Jewish masses of Eastern Europe he became a symbol of heresy.
